Dominic

Almost everything Dom says lately has a funny twist to it.  We don't want him to think he is a comedian, then he would try to be funny thus losing the hilarity of the moment.
His frank statements, coupled with the fact that he still doesn't pronounce many of his letters well leaves us holding back laughter til we can leave the room.

"Mom, can we sell the suburban and buy a mustang?"
"Dom, a mustang would only fit two people in the back seat and there are seven kids in this family."
"Oh, it's okay Mom.  We can just squish.  They are a wot faster."

Upon seeing Josh's cat, Squirt, pass away.  The hope was that Bella and Squirt would have babies and we could have a cat farm....Heaven help us!
"Well, I guess now we are going to have to mate dogs."

While watching me touch-up paint around the house.
"Mom, can we paint our house awesomer?"
"Like what, Dom?"
"Wike with fwames and lightening and stuff....yeah, that would be way awesomer."

Loading up in the suburban to go swimming.
"Dad, can I just call you goofy?"
"Huh???"

Cousins & Friends

The last two weekends have been filled with friends and cousins and family time.  It has been fun and chaotic, but mostly fun!  The boys had friends over last weekend and they wanted to burn all the prior year's school papers.  Boys and fire always go together, so I let them.  Two packages of hot dogs later they were happy and my paper drawer was pretty much empty!

This weekend, of course, has been filled with Thanksgiving and my boys were thankful for their cousin coming for a visit from Phoenix.  Another fire ensued as well as some target practice down in the field.  We filled in extra minutes with poker games, dancing, catching critters in a live trap and, Hallelujah, a haircut for my littlest bro, Joey!
I am a fan of short hair on a guy but Joey prefers his on the longer side.  For a year or two now I have been itching to take a pair of scissors, a knife, or really any sharp utensil to Joey's hair and he finally let me.
For the record, I used scissors!

Boys and fire ~
Is there a more dangerous combination?
Oh yes, boys and knives!

I love cousins...they always will be your friends ~

Big boys and  little boys love fires ~

More time with cousins ~

Thumbs up!

My girls are going to clean house in a poker game someday!

Okay, so maybe my boys too ~
The fine art of bluffing they are slowly learning ~

Nickles & Dom were not too thankful for a shared chair at Thanksgiving dinner~
BUT they were thankful for the pies that followed!

Dancing ~ Dancing ~ Dancing ~

We are thankful for Auntie Margaret teaching us how to dance.
Michaela and Kath are hell bent on ensuring that they share their knowledge with all their cousins and friends.

What a crazy night ~
The walls were pulsing from the music when suddenly our parish priest
was standing in our midst.
He stopped by as he was driving over the Pass.
Nothing like a little holiness to keep everyone in line!

Tickling the ivories ~

What a hip-hip-hippie!

The eyes are the lamp of the soul, Joey!

Can you spy the witto fwying squirrel?

Baby? Halle Jo

Why Boys Go to the ER

If I ever wondered why my boys have been to the ER  and my girls have not, this explains it all...or at least most of it!

The preparations ~
notice the multiple bungee cords and no girls in sight!

For whatever reason the little boys completely trust the older two ~

Wheeeeee ~

And Dom still can talk someone into tugging him back up the hills ~
"I'm so witto!"

Kittens and Careers

As mentioned earlier Joshie brought home a new kitten.  This kitten brought with it some sort of eye infection.  We  I kept hoping it would resolve on its own.  It didn't and now our sweet little Bella also has whatever Squirt brought to our house.  So we began a treatment regimen that will hopefully help.  Coincidentally, during this time Eric has decided he is going to be a vet because at this time in his life it seems the easiest and most appealing way to make a million bucks, thus enabling him to buy a ranch and become his ultimate dream, a rancher.

It was into this discussion that I entered the room, "Joshie, I am going to do most of this operation.  I need to practice for when I'm a vet someday. Oh, Mom, tell Joshie that I am doing this and tell him that he can't make a million bucks being a cheetah trainer.  Mom, did you know that Joshie wants to be a cheetah trainer?"

Well, I simply won't tell Josh that he can't make a million bucks being a cheetah trainer because if he is fast enough to catch a cheetah he'll make that money long before Eric does.

And, I can't be sure, but I think Joshie shows more an aptitude for veterinary medicine!  He only had to be scratched once before he decided to roll little Squirt up in a towel to administer the eye medication!

Thank You Auntie Maria!

Because I know I will forget every time we are on the phone ~

Thank you!

Nickles loved  getting his own package.  He looks like a little dictator in it, standing on the counter in the midst of the spinach and bananas!  Of course his long underwear bottoms don't really complement the coat.

Auntie Maria, you're AMAZING!

Influencing Our Children

Often I hear parents state that they don't force their children to attend church or discuss politics with them because they don't want to influence them; they want their children to make their own decisions, thus becoming stronger individuals.  This either makes me want to weep or laugh or both at once.

When Shannon and I married we made the decision to be open to the lives God may send us in the future, thus making the decision to pass along our genetics to future human beings.  Why would we not want to pass on our faith as well; our genetics and our beliefs are both part of our very being.  Are we seriously going to tell our children that we love them, but we aren't going to share what we believe with them?

As I listened to several deep discussions that my children were having Tuesday I was proud!  Maybe not when Dominic stated that he should put a certain political leader on a donkey and a rocket and send him to the moon, but generally it was good.  Joshie and Eric prayed for the elections while doing the dishes and Michaela and Katherine were caught praying for wisdom for all Americans, although they should have been doing their schoolwork.  It made me believe in a brighter future, at least for the moment!

The evening brought great disappointment, and even a bit of fear to our household.  I know we cannot place our hope in any political leader, that is why this country is where it's at.  We were hoping for a moral president that we could respect versus an administration we continually need to oppose so that our rights don't disappear in a poof of hot air.  And our children knew this.  They knew why we were sad. They knew that their future depended greatly on this election.  They knew our hopes, and that our convictions aren't based on some selfish desire, but a   yearning for a good, Godly country for them to live and thrive in.

Do we sit our children down and lecture them on our Founding Father's morals, what we believe, drilling it into their heads continually?  No, it is incorporated into our daily lives:  when we pray in front of an abortion clinic, when a friend has chosen an alternate lifestyle, when family members make rather immoral choices, when an acquaintance is suffering from a terminal illness and society would encourage them to "Die with Dignity," .  Each is an opportunity to form our children.  Then, when a political decision is to be made, they know the right choice, that there are varying degrees of importance on issues.  I do not want to send my children off to college for them to be influenced by a Planned Parenthood volunteer, encouraging them to have compassion for women, in the wrong sense of the word.

Yesterday morning found me curled up, depressed, in bed.  Shannon drug me out, "Get up, skip school, go to the pool, the park, order pizza for dinner, and remind yourself that we still live in a free country!"

So I did.

I dressed all the kiddos in red, my political statement, and headed to town.  We had a picnic in the park, swam at the pool and ordered Papa Murphy's.  When the girls asked to stay at the gym longer than I had planned to play basketball with their cousin my answer had to be, "Yes."  After all, we were celebrating FREEDOM, albeit with a heavy heart.

We will continue to influence our children, hopefully producing seven adults that can change the world they live in for the better.

Nothing feels as free as swinging as high as you can ~

Or running away from your brothers ~

Or climbing as high as you can ~

Or sneaking lunch before anyone else ~

Or eating cookies first ~

Or having a picnic when you are supposed to be at school ~

Or hiding in the slide from Mom ~

Did I mention swinging...how it still tickles one's stomach ~

Ahhhh, we've played enough for one day!

Springtime ~

Every fall I long for spring.
I love skiing and sledding and hockey and crisp, cold, white nights but sometime winter just plain and simply is too long up on our hill.  So while shopping at Costco I grabbed a couple bags of bulbs and planted them with Nickles.  Then I felt better for the day!

He loved it, digging in dirt is what little boys do best ~

Of course bikes are appealing too ~

Halloween

I secretly enjoy Halloween.  As a kid it was the only time I was allowed to wear lipstick, therefore I always dressed as some sort of princess.  As in the past years, Shannon was threatening to not allow trick-or-treating, but the kids and I won the argument ~ there actually didn't seem to be much of one ~ and ended up going.  Nickles got the hang of it about three houses in and could hardly contain himself.  That must seem magical to a child...walk up to someone's door, ring the doorbell and they hand you CANDY!
Frankly, I still feel like it's some sort of robbery.  Shannon's idea of resuming our own Halloween/All Saints Day party is appealing just so long we still dress up ~~~~ and I can be a princess.

My musketeer, cowboy, Kateri Tekakwitha, Pooh, Calvin & Hobbes

Calvin & Hobbes
the hat just didn't turn out the way it was envisioned

Joey, Stacy and Halle
Joey is counting down the days til next Halloween!

Joey can't wait to dress up like this ~
Actually my husband said he would wear this if I found it.
Should I try him?

Nickles was disappointed I wouldn't paint his nails after I was done  putting lipstick on his rosy cheeks~
He does like makeup!
