Happy 8th Birthday Annika

The birthday season begins!

Happy Birthday Annika.  What a delight you are to our family.  You are typically excited to do anything with anyone.  You love your older sisters and being doted upon by them, but you are always up for what the boys are doing.  A bit of a competitive streak runs through you!  You are always excited to go to work with Daddy,if only for the donuts he is sure to buy.  And a good book on the couch with Mom is right up your alley any day of the week.

I love you, my big 8-year-old!

Reading the treasure map from your brothers ~

Found the first clue ~

On to the second ~

What could they possibly have in mind at the pond??

The treasure has been found...
but not before a curious rock chuck got into it!

What could Auntie Margaret have sent?
Sweets???

And now for a humongous breath of air for ALL these candles!

Fire Season

Fire fighting is a spectator sport in our family.  Today when a fire started a couple miles from our home, Mom called to say that they were dipping water from their pond. Michaela was already down there. In a moment of excitement, she and Grandma ran down to the pond to get a super close look as the heli's swept down to fill their buckets.  Talk about up close and personal, the chopper was about 75 feet away as they scooped water up!  Grandma is so brave!
I was not so much fun and the rest of us stayed up at Mom's house to watch the excitement.

Nickles wasn't feeling too good, but this was exciting!

Michaela has changed her mind, her latest career interest is
becoming a helicopter pilot.
Oh dear ~

"Mom, wouldn't it be fun to ride in the bucket!"

Fishin' Montana style!

There goes Dad's water and maybe some of his fish!

The biggest sky ever!

Spring has SPRUNG!

It is finally here, not to say that there won't be more (God forbid) snow, but for the most part the seasons have changed!
Yay!
The bad part is the kids think we should be swimming in the pond now....brrrr.  We'll try to hold off on that for a bit longer.

My Friend Fr. Stu

I have this friend, he is a priest.  He has asked me to help him with a project that is making me ponder life on a deeper level.  Although we just began, the past couple days I find myself staring into oblivion, thinking about things he said.

Let me back up.  Fr. Stu was introduced to me by my cousin, Jake, a few years ago.  He was ordained a priest five years ago and I am sure God laughed as there was never a more unlikely man to become a priest. Now, he is dying.  I cannot remember the name of his disease, but I know it is similar to ALS in its progression and end result.  Last week he asked me if I could type.

"Slowly," was my response.

"The bishop has asked me to write some things down and I need someone to type as I cannot do it myself."
He can no longer lift his arms, spending his days lying in his recliner or propped in his wheelchair, but able to move his forearms, hands, and thumbs a bit.

Thinking of all my commitments I suggested he dictate and I type his thoughts up at home, more at my leisure.  "No," he responded, "I want you to come to the nursing home and we can sit and type them together."

"Great," I thought, "like I have time for that."  I promptly called a couple people to see if they would like to assist me in the project, each of us taking turns to get this project completed and off my plate.  I thought I'd begin so I could get a feel for what he needed, then would pass along instructions to whomever else could squeeze in an hour or two sitting with him.

Shannon was more understanding, more insightful.  He suggested we begin right away.  We started our session off with me feeding him a tuna melt.  It makes my heart ache to watch him eat, the effort it takes for a single bite, compounded by the fact that he is having difficulty breathing.  Then, we began writing.  My tendency is to edit anyone's words, not that mine are perfect, just more of a habit after correcting my kiddos' papers.  But I didn't this time. I wrote down every stilted fraction of a sentence just the way he said it, even inserting our banter occasionally.  As the evening progressed I realized, through tears, that I would complete this project alone.  Remembering Theresa's final days, the time spent with him is more precious than a clean house, laundry done, a perfect dinner.  Yes, I have a family to care for, and they will be cared for, but this is important.
For me. For him.
He is one of my close friends and his time is finite. He gave me a gift and I almost threw it away.

He tried to quit a couple times, but I prompted him to continue.  He was forcing his thoughts it seemed.  I knew there were much deeper thoughts.  We sat and talked about death for a while, about what it would be like.  This was so healing for me.  Having avoided the topic of death with Theresa before she died, this almost seemed a second chance had been granted.  After getting some thoughts off his chest,  he continued.  We didn't get a lot done, but it was a beginning........

To be continued ~

Michaela & Katherine's Dance

The girls went to a dance last night.  Since it was a formal affair, the preparations in the weeks prior took a lot of time.  Dresses needed to be found, which was particularly touchy due to Michaela needing something to hide her brace, and  hairstyles needed to be chosen.  Knowing how inept their mother is at styling hair...think braids and pony tails....they asked Stacy to help them in this department.  This proved a very good decision, the girls' hair was the envy of everyone!  They had a great time with wonderful friends.  What a gift to be able to leave, know your children are safe, while they participate in "normal" activities with their friends.

The best part for me was at the end, though.  While the parents cleaned up, the kids were out in the rain taking pictures.  Eric was the photographer.  When parents are behind the camera, the children are often a bit more reserved, not so when the cameraman is an 11-year-old boy.  Following that, they all traipsed down to the Big Dipper for ice cream.  Seeing them all sitting around the table laughing and enjoying cones made a perfect evening.  As a homeschooling mother I often worry if they will  be "normal."  They are better than normal.  As Eric came up the stairs to sit with his Mom, they all scooted aside, "Eric, sit here.  No, sit over here.  Eric, there's room right here."
Momma's heart filled right up!
There is no exclusion, everyone is welcome in their group no matter their age or quirkiness and I like that...no, I love that.  Sometimes there is difficulty with friends, it is just part of growing up, but generally speaking, all they want to do is have fun!

How Stacy did anything with this mess is beyond me!

Funny Stuff

Yesterday was nuts ~ there was a million things on my to-do list and I checked them all off.  Of course not without several people mentioning while I was running (really just walking quickly) through stores that I seemed to be in an awful hurry.  It's on those days that the kids say the funniest things, kinda brings me down to earth that there is more to life than accomplishments.

We watched a movie about St. Barbara a couple nights ago. Since the movie was in Italian with subtitles....now I'm realizing why it didn't hold Dom's attention as he can't read yet.....Annika decided she wanted to learn Italian and go to Rome someday.  It probably had something to do with the fact that the character that played Barbara was beautiful! As it so often happens in this house, I missed explaining the movie subject matter, like the era, characters, etc.
As we were driving through town she stated matter-of-factly, "I want to learn Italian still but I am NOT going to Rome.  They kill Christians there. And we are Christians."

So, I had the opportunity to explain the movie to her.

Later, Eric, looking at his watch states out-of-the-clear-blue-sky, "In 3 hours 20 minutes it will be 24 hours."

"24 hours from what?" I asked.

"24 hours from some time last night."

He has always been a bit of a time man, but that was a totally new one!

The following pictures are from a week ago.  The best trips to town are the days we make time to go to the park.  Really, how important are groceries anyway???

Mags, you would have died!
The seagulls were swooping all around us to catch the bread as the kids threw it to them!

The rocket was barred, but that didn't stop Dom
from squeezing through to climb to the top ~

Swings in the spring ~

Quick! Take the picture, Mom!

Big sis always figures something exciting out.
